Personal Tip: If you decide to board the train to Hallstatt, make sure you have 5-10€ in cash as the train drops you on the other side of the lake, and you will have to take a ferry to the main town. The ferry goes every 30 minutes or every hour depending on the time of the year and the ferry takes about 15 minutes. There is no ATM at the train station, so make sure you have cash to board the ferry as the card payments are not accepted.

PS: I didn't have cash on my travel and little I was aware about this situation, and I wasn't confident about borrowing cash from other tourists, so I had to take a detour and make my own way into the town by crossing the lake via inner roads and a little help from google maps, it took me about 3-4 hours on the detour but that was one of the best detour I have done, the views and scenery that you are able to explore during that journey is unimaginable. So, if you are up for that way of exploring Hallstatt, make sure you have comfortable shoes, a good jacket, and fully charged phone as you will be capturing some breathtaking views of Hallstatt which you won't find otherwise. Once you reach the main town, there is an ATM where you can withdraw money and board the ferry back later in the evening. The way Hallstatt looks after sunset is a pure delight to capture on you way back from the ferry.
